Fireworks

Light bursts forth
In beautiful array
Color dazzles my eyes

Its movement,
The entire display
captures my attention

And for a while
I am lost in its beauty
Forgetful of all else.

Pleasure and
a feast for the eyes
If only for a moment.

My life should be more like that.

Burdens

Reading the past
Memories flow like a river
Happiness, Joy, Purity
Oh the innocence and faith

Where are you now?
Darkness fills your being
And it drags you down
The weight is too heavy to bear.

Yet you cling to the weight
This weight that drowns
Why won't you let go?

So easy it seems
To let go and float.
Float to the top for air.

Yet the air continues
To burn in your lungs
Your body fights to stay alive
Yet you cling to this deadly weight.

The memories of happiness
Seem so very distant
So very unreachable.

And yet all that remains
is to let go of that weight
that you so desperately cling to.

Light

Muscles strain
left weakened
by lack of use
A rare smile

The eyes darken
and lose their spark
Despite that smile.

Enduring forever
in the most unlikely soul
Is hope.

Hope that one day soon
That smile will brighten
These ever fading eyes
And brighten others in return.
